Colorado Springs to Estes Park

Today we leave Woodland Park and the Colorado Springs area and head to Estes Park for the next few days.  We have really enjoyed our time here!  Our cabin has been perfect and the town of Woodland Park is very cute and pretty convenient to everything we’ve wanted to do.  The town must have some pretty strict building codes because everything from Walmart to McDonalds looks like a log cabin.  Even the Sonic fits right into this mountain town.

We loaded up this morning and each car went it’s own way through Denver and onto Estes Park. The Connors had a pit stop planned at Junction Food & Drink for lunch. Our friend Pat builds and operates food halls all around the country and one his newest ones is in Denver.

Pat hooked us up with some gift cards and we sampled food from most of the stalls. Everything was so delicious!  We had pizza, tacos, sushi, burgers, coffee, and a charcuterie box to go. We were stuffed, but it was worth it!  If you’re ever n Denver, you definitely want to stop in here for a meal.

Because we apparently haven’t been on enough stairs lately, we went to Red Rocks amphitheater next. We got there just a few minutes before they closed up to get ready for tonight’s concert.

About 20 steps in, Morgan turned to me and said, “I’m glad I didn’t go with you guys yesterday”.

They had already closed the seating area so we couldn’t really go in. They were doing a sound check and it sounded amazing. It is such a gorgeous location and great acoustics, I would love to see a concert here one day.

Soon they kicked us out and we got on the road to Estes Park. We actually passed by the rest of the family while they were taking this picture at the Estes Park sign.

They had taken a more scenic route to Estes Park and were hoping to drive up Mt. Evan’s, but there was a reservation system in place and they couldn’t get in.

We all stopped in at the Rocky Mountain National Park visitor center to get some ideas for hikes and activities before going to our cabin.

Our home away from home in Estes Park was not as nice as our previous place, but the location and view were great. We spent most of the evening on the back deck enjoying the views and weather. Neither house has air conditioning and we have missed it. The whole country is experiencing a heat wave right now, so we might just be here at the wrong time but we all agree that air conditioning really should be standard here.

We ate charcuterie al fresco in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. Not a bad way to spend an evening!

Caleb brought out his binoculars and even spotted some elk on the mountain!

Ryan and I spent the evening planning a hike for the next morning.  Tomorrow we hike up Flattop Mountain!
